After leaving Lonestar in 1998, Rich embarked on a solo career with BNA Records, releasing two singles for the label. Although he recorded his debut album, Underneath the Same Moon, it was not released until 2006. In 2001, Rich self-released his album Rescue Me, which he was inspired to record by a cancer patient named Katie Darnell.
In 2003, Rich teamed up with Big Kenny to form the country music duo Big & Rich. They released three albums on Warner Bros. Records, which included hit singles like "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" and "Lost in This Moment." The latter reached Number One on the country music charts, cementing Big & Rich's place in the industry.
After Big & Rich went on hiatus in 2007, Rich focused on his solo career and began working on his third album, Son of a Preacher Man. The album produced two chart-topping singles, "Shuttin' Detroit Down" and "Country Done Come to Town." In 2011, Rich released two extended plays, Rich Rocks and For the Kids, before re-establishing Big & Rich in 2012.
Throughout his career, Rich has been recognized for his songwriting skills, and has written for many other country artists, including Gretchen Wilson and Faith Hill. In addition to his music career, Rich has also appeared on several television shows, including The Celebrity Apprentice and Nashville Star.
